7.01Protein Peas are one of the earliest cultivated food crops. Evidence of cultivation dates from Neolithic times about 4,500 BC, and peas are a very important food source throughout the world. Peas are wonderful at fixing nitrogen from the atmosphere, making them an environmentally sustainable crop as they don't need nitrogen fertilizer.
Protein is a macro-nutrient essential to good health and growth. While proteins are best known for their role in growth and maintenance of muscle mass, they also have a vital role in the structure of bones and tendons, muscle contraction and nutrient transportation. Proteins are made up of amino acids, commonly described as the ‘building blocks’ of proteins.
Our bodies are made up of around 75% water and protein is the largest component of the bodies muscles on average about 20%. When the muscles are placed under stress during exercise or weight training the component proteins break down and the muscle fibres separate. Protein synthesis is the process of repair and growth and requires raw materials in the form of amino acids. For muscle building, to gain muscle mass, protein synthesis must exceed protein breakdown.
Our pea protein powder starts with organically grown yellow peas (Pisum sativum ssp. arvense) also known as field or dry peas.
After harvesting, the peas are selected, cleaned and liquefied. The protein is extracted through a double separation process; the pure protein liquid is decanted and then clarified. It is then dried, sifted, inspected and packed for dispatch.
Our organic pea protein powder contains a minimum protein content of 80%, and contains all eight of the essential amino acids. Pea protein is hypo-allergenic which means it is less likely to cause allergic reactions when compared to protein powders derived from egg, soy or milk.
The relationship between protein intake and growth or maintenance of muscle mass is well established. Additional protein is necessary for athletes and people looking to add muscle mass. Via the mechanism of protein synthesis, amino acids repair and develop muscle protein in endurance and strength athletes.
Good quality protein intake is essential for people of all ages and at all stages of growth. In elderly people, loss of muscle mass (known as sarcopenia) is a significant health issue, as increased frailty raises the risk of falls. Protein is also an important component in bones and a daily supply of dietary protein is required for bone maintenance.
Meals high in pea protein powder makes you feel fuller and less likely to overeat and pea protein can have a valuable role in weight management and maintenance of a healthy body composition.
Pea protein goes well in a smoothie with any of our fruit and cocoa powders. Try adding a tablespoon or two of our organic pea protein to soups and casseroles to provide a hidden protein boost.
